How the energy check works
Each answer is scored from 0 (on track) to 3 (big drain) in one of 13 habit areas: sleep length, sleep timing, snoring, caffeine, alcohol, fluids, meals, sitting, too little exercise, too much exercise, stress, screens before bed and daylight. Your energy habit score is simply how many of the possible points you avoided, so 100 means every habit area is on track. The drains are ranked by score, with the most common big hitters (sleep, breathing at night, stress) listed first when scores tie.
The fixes come from public-health guidance rather than supplements or hacks. Adults need 7 or more hours of sleep a night on a regular basis, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society. The NHS lists regular sleep times, eating every 3 to 4 hours, cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, drinking enough water, moving more and managing stress as the main self-help steps for tiredness. In a sleep-lab study, 400 mg of caffeine taken 6 hours before bed still cut total sleep by more than an hour, which is why the check asks about timing as well as amount.
Some answers are not about habits at all. Unexplained weight change, low mood for two weeks or more, breathlessness, loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or tiredness that lasts for weeks despite rest are reasons to see a doctor, who can look for treatable causes such as anaemia, an under- or overactive thyroid, diabetes, low vitamin B12 or vitamin D, sleep apnoea, depression or a side effect of medicine.
What to do with your results
- Pick one or two fixes, not all of them. Start with the top drain and give it two weeks before judging.
- Sleep first. Better sleep usually makes the other habits easier. Use the sleep calculator to set a bedtime that fits your alarm.
- Re-take the check in a month to see what has changed.
- Don’t sit on red flags. If the check lists anything under “Talk to your doctor”, book that appointment even if you also work on your habits.
